Large very beautiful African Nkisi statue of the BAKONGO tribe from Congo.


This statue is covered with copper and brass plates. Copper and brass are in the Bacongo community highly valuble. Therefor this is an important fetish statue. The statue has eyes made out of glass and on the belly it has a hollow space, by the medicine man filled with magical herbs and implements. This is covered by a glass as well. This is called the eye of the soul. The figure stands on the back of a fable figure.


In African art, Nkisis are the embodiment of voodoo and witchcraft. Nkisis don’t only cure but also protect and promote hunting or fishing. It can also be used as a weapon and have a negative effect on the people involved. Pouches with magic substances were attached to the statue to activate its spiritual power. Small statues were for personal use, large statues like this served the whole village.
